Paparouna

Paparouna was purchased by the Virtual Owners Partnership in late April, 1997, at the Fasig-Tipton two-year-olds-in-training sale held in Lexington, KY. A '95 filly by Unbridled, out of Laurasia by Pancho Villa, Paparouna was bred in Kentucky by Dion A. Recachina.

AP 4th, MdSpWt, 6f, track fast. Purse $18,000. Ray Sibille up.
Paparouna got a slow start when the ground broke under her feet in the gate, made a couple of runs only to get checked, and after looming in the stretch ran out of gas.

  • 2nd VOP Race - 10/29/97
  • HAW 2nd, MdSpWt, 6f, track fast. Purse $17,500. Ray Sibille up.
Paparouna once again got a slow start and was laying well back of the pack down the backstretch. Ray kicked her into gear on the turn and she responded with a huge 2nd quarter, moving into contention at the top of the stretch. After that, the Equibase chart states she "wore down rivals". Lotsa rookie VOP'sters in on Paparouna, and they sure were happy campers as they trooped off to the Winner's Circle!

  • 3rd VOP Race - 11/19/97
  • HAW 5th, alw21000n1x, 1 mi. 70yds, track fast. Purse $21,000. Ray Sibille up.
Again a slow start, and Ray kept her well off the pace in the early going. With a little urging on the 2nd turn, she moved into contention at the top of the stretch and starting chasing the leader. Down the long HAW stretch she caught up with the leader bit by bit, and we thought we might have another win, but she tired slightly, and came up 1/2 a horse short at the wire, salvaging the place. Still, a nice effort for her first effort around two turns.
    Paparouna's running line: 1-6-4-4-4-2-2, fractional times: 24.44, 48.23, 1:14.11, 1:39.46, 1:43.75

    Paparouna's 1998 Campaign

  • 4th VOP Race - 09/18/98
  • HAW 8th, alw26000n1x, 6 furlongs, track fast. Purse $26,000. Marlon St. Julien up.
Paparouna made a heroic return to racing after her long layoff. She broke very cleanly this time, and stayed closer to the pace than previously. Under Marlon's guidance, Paparouna saved ground around the far turn and began to move up on the leaders approaching the stretch. She hugged the rail and actually made the lead by half a length with 100 yards to go. She was nipped at the wire, however, by a very fast closing rival, beaten just a neck. VOPsters were elated at this performance, considering that this was not Paparouna's best distance and that she was returning from such a long time off.
    Paparouna's running line: 5-9-5-4-2-2, fractional times: 22.35, 46.29, 59.01, 1:12.25

  • 5th VOP Race -10/30/98
  • HAW 5th, alw26000n1x, 6.5 furlongs, track muddy. Purse $26,000. Mark Guidry up.
Paparouna broke poorly once again, and was squeezed between two horses at the start. She spotted the field three lengths before beginning a steady gain that persisted throughout the race. She move up to fifth after a quarter, and was fourth after four furlongs. She moved to third in the final furlong, and gamely bested the #4 horse at the wire for the place. Paparouna overcame several problems in this race, including a muddy track, the loss of a shoe, and the sprint distance. She was no match for the unchallenged speed of the #7 horse, racing 6-1/4 lengths behind the winning time. A game effort by Paparouna under the most trying of conditions.
    Paparouna's running line: 5-7-5-4-3-2, fractional times: 22.98, 46.27, 1:11.07, 1:17.71

  • 6th VOP Race - 11/13/98
  • HAW 8th, alw26000n1x, 6 furlongs, track fast. Purse $26,000. Ray Sibille up.
Paparouna broke very cleanly and settled nicely into ninth place, well behind the very fast early pace. Ray asked her for some run at the three-eighths pole, and Paparouna responded, racing six wide around the turn.. Coming to the eighth pole, Paparouna very nearly made the lead, but at this point she tired and began to flatten out. The favorite came swiftly by her to win by two lengths. Paparouna was another length back of the second place horse. Partners agreed that it was time for Paparouna to try a route around two turns.
    Paparouna's running line: 6-8-9-7-2-3, fractional times: 22.56, 46.59, 59.35, 1:11.88

    Paparouna's 1999 Campaign

  • 7th VOP Race -06/20/99
  • Spt 5th, alw29000n1$x, 6 furlongs, track fast. Purse $29,000. Mark Guidry up.
Paparouna got away cleanly, though a little slowly. She trailed the field through the first quarter-mile, then began to pick up horses entering the far turn. She rallied mildly through the stretch but was unable to catch the front pair. Paparouna seemed to run her race, but lacked sufficient early speed to be effective at this sprint distance.
    Paparouna's running line: 6-4-6-4-4-3, fractional times: 22.72, 46.56, 58.61, 1:11.40
