Itbaya

VOP's longest running horse 5/1995 - 8/2000 a well deserved retirment.

Tossed in against the good horses, Itbaya didn't seem to even want to try to run with them. Disappointing.

Itbaya's 1997 Campaign

21st VOP Race - 01/18/97

FG 6th, clm25000, 5-1/2f, turf firm. Randy Romero up.
Itbaya did a little hop step coming out of the gate that immediately put her behind this bunch of sprinters, and she trailed the pack down the backstretch. But she had plenty of run left to make a move in the stretch and get up to finish 5th, just a neck back of the show money.

22nd VOP Race - 02/01/97

FG 10th, clm25000, 7-1/2f, turf good. Randy Romero up.
Randy and Itbaya kept a little closer to the leaders this time, but still had some tight running quarters on the backstretch and through the turn. When the field turned for home, the horses fanned out, and Randy gunned Itbaya through a hole to come up and challenge the leader. It wasn't quite enough though, as the leader hung on by a nose over the 2nd place horse who finished a nose in front of Itsy. Still, a nice effort.

Itbaya and Mark settled into 2nd place right after the start and stayed there all down the backside and through the 2nd turn. At the top of the stretch they blew by the tiring leader, and Mark took Itsy home in a comfortable hand ride for an easy win by 2 lengths as the 1.6/1 favorite.

Itbaya's 1999 Campaign

41st VOP Race - 07/05/99

HAW 9th, alw33000n3X, about 1 mile, turf firm. Randall Meier up.
Itbaya ran evenly in her first race back in nearly nine months. She settled into mid pack, between six and seven lengths from the lead and remained there throughout the contest. She raced wide for the entire race, passed a tiring horse down the stretch, and was up for a small check, beaten six lengths.
Itbaya's running line: 9-8-7-6-6-5-5; fractions 23.48, 47.70, 1:13.21, 1:25.53, 1:38.01

42nd VOP Race - 08/04/99

HAW 7th, alw33000n3X, 1 1/8 miles, turf firm. Eusebio Razo, Jr. up.
Itbaya again ran evenly, remaining in about 7th place throughout the race. She never reached contention against a tough group of allowance turfers. She tired somewhat in the final furlong, finishing more than 14 lengths behind the winner.
Itbaya's running line: 7-7-7-7-7-7-7; fractions 21.85, 46.36, 1:11.44, 1:38.12, 1:51.39

43rd VOP Race - 09/10/99

HAW 10th, clm25000, abt 1 1/16 miles, turf firm. Randall Meier up.
Itbaya broke very sharply and was skillfully dropped down to the rail behind the first flight well before reaching the clubhouse turn. She settled between horses in fourth place, then moved to third entering the far turn. Itbaya raced the turn very well, passing the pace setter and chasing the new leader to the eighth pole. She tired in the final furlong and was passed by the closing #1 horse, then was just nipped for the show by two others, beaten 4 1/2 lengths overall.
Itbaya's running line: 9-4-4-4-3-2-5; fractions 23.10, 47.71, 1:13.43, 1:39.92, 1:46.76

44th VOP Race - 10/23/99

HAW 1st, clm25000, 1 1/8 miles, turf firm. Purse $25,300. Carlos Silva up.
Itbaya lost all chance to contend at the break. She tossed her head at the start, broke a step slowly, then was squeezed back to last place after only a few hops. She raced on gamely in seventh position to the stretch, then passed the sixth place horse. Itbaya made a big effort to pick up a small check, but just missed by a nose.
Itbaya's running line: 5-7-7-7-7-6-6; fractions 21.65, 45.50, 1:09.88, 1:35.95, 1:48.49

45th VOP Race - 11/09/99

HAW 1st, clm14000, 1 1/16 miles, track fast. Purse $25,300. Sebastian Madrid up.
Itbaya, now racing out of Sam David's barn, was entered to race on the dirt for the first time in nearly five years. The race was intended to make Itbaya eligible for starter allowances on the turf this winter. To this end, it served its purpose. Itbaya ran as if she hated the dirt surface, showing some interest through the first six furlongs, but then she "spit the bit" and finished last, 18 lengths behind the winner.
Itbaya's running line: 2-3-4-4-4-7-7; fractions 24.51, 48.24, 1:13.48, 1:39.42, 1:46.30

46th VOP Race - 12/11/99

HOU 10th, clm25000, 1 mile, track firm. Purse $9800. Glen Murphy up.
Itbaya was rated well off the fast pace as she saved ground along the rail. Remaining on the rail around the stretch turn, Itsy moved from seventh position to second, but could not close on the run-away winner. A nice effort for Itbaya in her first start in Texas.
Itbaya's running line: 6-8-4-7-7-4-2; fractions 23.66, 47.51, 1:12.06, 1:24.65, 1:37.82

Itbaya broke near the back of the pack, and then settled nicely into 8th place, just 3 lengths behind the leader. She began to put away horses down the backside, moving into fifth place at the head of the stretch while swinging four wide. Itbaya made the lead inside the 3/16ths pole and pulled away to win easily by nearly five lengths. A wonderful start to the new year for VOP!

Itbaya jumped up in class and scored a second concsecutive victory, pulling away from $35,000 claimers in the stretch to win by a length. As in her previous race, Itbaya broke near the back of the pack, and then settled along the rail in last place. She remained in last, about eight lengths from the lead throughout the first half of the race. She began a rally on the far turn, and she moved up to fifth place while fanned six-wide entering the stretch. Itsy made up four lengths as she exploded past the remaining four horses in the final sixteenth. A second impressive Year 2000 effort for this fine race mare!
Itbaya's running line: 5-7-7-7-7-5-1; fractions 23.60, 48.06, 1:14.01, 1:39.89, 1:46.15

Itbaya broke cleanly and fell into seventh place while dropping to the rail approaching the clubhouse turn. She saved ground around the turn and remained in seventh to the 3/8ths pole. She then began to rally but was trapped inside and was unable to find running room behind a wall of horses. A second rally inside the eighth pole was twarted as the second place horse drifted out in front of her in deep stretch. Even though Itsy finished up well, the lack of pace and the traffic troubles she encountered did her in. She finished third, beaten only a length and a head.
Itbaya's running line: 7-6-7-7-7-3-3; fractions 23.18, 47.80, 1:13.11, 1:25.97, 1:38.98

50th VOP Race - 03/05/00

HOU 9th, clm25000, 1 1/16 miles, track firm. Purse $9,800. Glen Murphy up.
The pedestrian fractions of this race did not suit Itbaya. The race leader and eventual winner controlled the pace throughout, and no other horse could challenge her in the sprint to the wire. Itbaya was closer to the pace than usual, put at no time did she threaten the leader. Itbaya did not fire in the stretch and was passed by several horses as they sprinted home.
Itbaya's running line: 7-2-5-3-3-5-6; fractions 24.92, 50.65, 1:15.41, 1:40.20, 1:46.37

51st VOP Race - 04/02/00

HOU 9th, clm25000, 1 1/16 miles, track sloppy. Purse $9,800. Glen Murphy up.
Itsy's race was rained off the turf, so, in what amounted to a public workout, she battled for last place throughout with the #5 horse. Glen wrapped her up early, and she came home a distant seventh of seven, hating the slop all the way!
Itbaya's running line: 6-6-6-6-6-6-7; fractions 24.11, 48.17, 1:13.62, 1:39.54, 1:46.32

52nd VOP Race - 04/14/00 Chart

LS 5th, clm15000, 1 1/16 miles, track firm. Purse $17,000. Glen Murphy up.
Itbaya broke well and took a ground saving 8th-place postion at the rail before leaving the mile and a sixteenth chute. She relaxed and remained in eighth all the way to the 3/8ths pole. Glen turned her loose at this point and she made a strong move to 5th as the horses turned for home. Itbaya found an opening between horses and shot through as the leaders reached the eighth pole. Under a steady drive in deep stretch, Itsy collared the leader and was up by a neck under the wire. This was a classic Itbaya victory, the kind that VOPsters are getting used to this year!
Itbaya's running line: 4-7-8-8-8-5-1; fractions 24.13, 49.38, 1:13.80, 1:39.47, 1:45.80

53rd VOP Race - 05/14/00

LS 3rd, clm20000, 1 1/16 miles, track firm. Purse $21,000. Glen Murphy up.
Breaking from the ninth post postion, Itbaya left the gate sharpley, brushed slightly with the #10 horse, then took back to last place for a ground saving rail trip. She remained several lengths behind the field to the far turn. Itbaya then began to pick up horses, but could find little running room turning for home. Horses in front of Itsy were not backing up, however, as the pace of the race was rather modest. She emerged from the pack in fourth place and finished up well without gaining on the leaders.
Itbaya's running line: 9-10-10-10-9-5-4; fractions 23.91, 48.15, 1:13.47, 1:39.44, 1:46.13

54th VOP Race - 06/03/00

LS10th, clm20000, 1 mile, track firm. Purse $21,000. Glen Murphy up.
Itbaya was taken back after the break and raced near the back of the field for the first half-mile. Approaching the half-mile pole, Glen asked her to pick it up a bit, and she responded, moving into sixth place before reaching the quarter pole. As they straightened out for the run down the lane, Itsy passed all but the #4 horse, who gamely held on for the win. Itbaya finished a strong second, beaten a little more than a length.
Itbaya's running line: 6-9-9-6-6-3-2; fractions 23.94, 48.11, 1:13.26, 1:39.17

55th VOP Race - 06/29/00

LS1st, clm20000, 1 1/16 miles, track firm. Purse $21,000. Glen Murphy up.
Itbaya was hung three-wide throughout this race while racing more forwardly than usual. She showed no interest when called upon to make a run in the final quarter-mile. She finished last in the field of six. A dull effort, to say the least.
Itbaya's running line: 5-6-4-5-6-6-6; fractions 1:45.25 (hand timed)

56th VOP Race - 07/14/00 7/14/00 Race: PP's  7/14/00 Chart:

LS9th, clm15000, 1 1/16 miles, track firm. Purse $17,000. Ted Gondron up.
With new rider Ted Gondron in the irons, Itbaya ran a race remarkably similar to her last effort. She was taken back to 7th at the break, racing two-wide around the first turn. She then made a move four-wide down the back stretch, and challenged for position, still four-wide, turning for home. Her patented late kick was missing, however, and Itbaya flattened out to finish a dull sixth.
Itbaya's running line: 7-8-7-8-5-5-6; fractions 25.32, 50.37, 1:14.98, 1:39.55, 1:45.64

Itbaya gave it a good try but ran out of gas. She came out of the race in good shape but the partnership has decided its time she hung up her racing shoes and head for the breeding shed.
